Now an activated charcoal (charcoal filter) is a type of an activated carbon, and the charcoal form is most commonly used in the household. While other carbon based filters are used for more of a bigger scale of things. Activated Charcoal is most commonly used in air filters around the everyday household. If you have a Kenmore air filter in your house, then you have a charcoal filter. An air filter is what you would most commonly think of when you think of activated charcoal, or charcoal filters. Activated charcoal has the air pass through it making the air you breathe less harmful. However it is also used in things such as refrigerators. Activated charcoals are mixed in with refrigerants to keep out the air and chemicals that make hot air, you obviously don’t want hot air coming into your refrigerator. Charcoal filters such as the ones within your air filters and refrigerators do have to be replaces after an extended period of use. Unlike some Activated charcoals that are in the contents of medicine.

Yes medicine too has some form of activated charcoal within its make. Hospitals usually give medicine with the activated charcoal in it so it can absorb some of the bad chemicals within your body. Part 1: How Does a Charcoal Filter Work

What are charcoal filters, and how can they help you? Well charcoal itself is carbon, compressed carbon that has formed into a solid form. Now carbon, unlike many other gasses and chemicals, is not harmful to the human body, even if ingested. The harm carbon can do is if you work if a coal mill, the black lung is a very common disease made from carbon, but if you don’t work in a coal mill your pretty much safe from carbon, after all the human body is composed of carbon. Now activated charcoal (otherwise known as charcoal filters) is when charcoal has been treated with oxygen, when charcoal is treated with oxygen it will then thousands and for bigger pieces sometimes millions of tiny little pores open up then making that piece of charcoal an absorbent.

What is an absorbent? An absorbent is a material, solid, liquid, or gas that absorbs other chemicals. Water is probably the most well known and most common absorbent. There are many other materials that are very common that are well known absorbents. Absorbents also make up what most filters are, absorbing other harmful materials to keep them away from the human nostrils or the human body. Absorbents are used in a wide variety of filters such as things like, gas purification, gold purification, metal extraction, water purification, medicine, sewage treatment, and air filters in gas masks.
